Here in the U.K we throw away tonnes of rubbish each year, but what are the sorts of things we get rid of that could be re-used or recycled in some way? Well people all over the world are throwing away many useful things that can help in many ways, for example wood and paper can be used to heat home or be recycled into new products/paper or in the case of wood, can even be used to build new homes in some countries across the world.
We have a finite number of resources and by thinking a little more before we throw something away we can help those resources to last that bit longer.
But why are we not recycling as much as we could? Well on average 9 out of 10 people would recycle if it was made easier and a major 60% of the rubbish that ends up in our bins could be recycled. Governments across the globe really need to consider how they can make it easy for people to recycle, so much so that it becomes part of everyday life. Getting rid of a lot of rubbish also has a huge negative impact on the natural environment; harmful chemicals and greenhouse gasses are released from rubbish in landfill sites. Recycling helps to reduce the pollution caused by waste.
So it is really important that we take action today to ensure we don’t leave the next generations with a real problem! We need to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill and not only look at recycling our waste but also on how we can reduce our energy consumption in the first place. It takes lots and lots of people taking little action every day to really make a difference, so don’t think your efforts aren’t worthwhile, they all add up!
