garden patio makeover

Why not give your patio a makeover so that you can make the most of it during the warmer months? Whether you want to go all out with a big transformation or just give it a quick facelift, you’ll find that you spend a lot more time there once it’s looking more appealing.

Plan your makeover

Before you start, spend some time thinking about what you want to achieve. Do you want to make some major changes or just spruce things up a bit? Do you have a budget for it or will it be mostly DIY upgrades.

Think too about what you want to use your patio for. Will it be mostly for lounging in the sun with a good book, for alfresco meals, or perhaps a bit of both? Will you be barbequing on the patio? Knowing what you will use it for will give you a clearer idea of what type of furniture and accessories will be best suited for that function.

If you’re thinking of making it a biggish project, then it helps to start collecting ideas from magazines or on Pinterest.

Clean and tidy first

Before you start adding anything to your patio, take some time to give it a good clean and tidy up. Put aside any plant pots or furniture that is broken or no longer needed so that you can look at your patio area as a clean slate.

Remove any weeds and moss as well as rubbish, or give the surface a good clean with a power jet wash, unless of course you’re going to be replacing the surface.

Move stuff around to clean underneath and you might also come up with some new ideas for how to use various bits and pieces. For instance perhaps the small little patio table that isn’t big enough for your family to eat at will work well as a plant display stand. Don’t buy anything new until you’ve cleared away what you no longer want and have made the patio area as clean and tidy as you can.

Big ideas

If you want a big transformation then laying a new surface can make an enormous difference. Choose a surface that is suitable for your requirements. For example if you want to use an open charcoal barbeque on the patio then you need to make sure the surface you choose will be fire safe.

A canopy can also make a patio area much more versatile, as it will protect from both sun and drizzle, so you may find you’re able to spend more time outside than before.

You could also build a barbeque or bar area, or splash out on some luxury garden furniture that almost makes your patio into another room to comfortably lounge in.

Budget ideas

If your budget doesn’t allow for big changes, or you don’t particularly want the hassle, there are still plenty of things you can do to make a difference.

Putting some outdoor cushions onto garden furniture can make it more comfortable, or perhaps add some outdoor beanbags, floor cushions or a hammock to give you space to relax. You could even make your own if you’re a little bit handy.

Adding plant pots and containers with lots of colourful flowers won’t break the bank and will really brighten the space up and make it feel a lot more welcoming.

Lighting is also a great way to make your patio area more welcoming in the evenings. This can range from top of the range patio heater lighting to very inexpensive fairy lights and candles.
